This species has the last ray of its dorsal fin extended, a characteristic that distinguishes this sardine from others. In fact, the more intact this ray is, the fresher it is. Like all sardines, it has an intense flavor and an excellent price/convenience and healthiness ratio.

It is distributed from the United States to Argentina. Very abundant on the Brazilian coast, it is a species highly targeted by artisanal fishing.
