It is a freshwater fish from the Amazon region. When young, it is called a "Filhote" and reaches an average weight of 30 kg. As an adult, it can reach up to 2.5 meters and weigh 300 kg, at which point it is called a "Piraíba". It has white flesh and a high, long fillet.

General information

General characteristics

It is found in the Araguaia and Amazon basins. It has a rounded body, a depressed head with small eyes located at the top. Its maxillary barbels are rounded and very long, about twice the size of the body in young individuals, and about 2/3 of the body in adults.
