The skipjack tuna belongs to the same family as tuna and can often be mistaken for or intentionally marketed as tuna. However, in terms of flavor and commercial importance, it is very different from its tuna relatives. Its meat is very oily, which is why it is rarely consumed fresh. Brazilian legislation allows this species to be called "tuna" when canned.

General characteristics

Skipjack tuna is considered one of the five most important species in global fisheries production. One way to differentiate bonitos (3 species) from tuna is by their mouths. Bonitos have serrated teeth, while tuna do not.
