General information
General characteristics
Chinook salmon live in the colder regions of the Pacific Ocean and breed in the freshwater rivers and streams of the Pacific Northwest. When they reach sexual maturity, which can be between three and seven years of age, they make a long migratory journey back to the river where they were born to reproduce. They expend a lot of energy in this migration process and also in building nests among the rocks. They reproduce, care for the eggs for a time, and end up dying before the eggs even hatch, serving as food for bears and other animals. This is part of the context of this ecosystem.
